Pagan Fiction Authors Coming Together!

showdownfbevent

Did you know that many of your favourite Pagan authors write fiction too? And did you know that there’s a lot of great fiction out there written by Pagan authors? Pagans have unique perspectives to offer to the world of fiction, from a deep understanding of ancient mythologies to unique character relationships that break the standard mould.

I’m pleased to announce that on Sunday, March 12, I’m hosting a Facebook event to bring Pagan fiction writers and readers together.

A Weird West Playlist

Do you ever wonder what writers listen to when they write?  For me it depends on the nature of the story I’m telling, and its setting.  For the Wyrd West Chronicles I like to listen to spaghetti western theme music, epic fantasy and game music written in a similar style, a handful of steampunk music that isn’t too electronic sounding, and dark country.  You’ll find that a lot of this list comes from other Weird West settings or Space Westerns.

You’ll notice that a lot of the songs on the list were composed by Derek & Brandon Flechter, who write epic music for use in different genres and who post their work on YouTube.  They have granted me permission to use their Western music in the audiobook versions of the Wyrd West Chronicles!  I’ll be working on the audiobooks as soon as each novelette comes out, and I’ll be making them available on DriveThruFiction and my Bandcamp site.

In the meantime, enjoy the playlist!

The Weird West

I didn’t realize when I started writing my Wyrd West Chronicles that there was actually a genre for this!  No new ideas under the sun, I guess; but then again, it seems that my take is just a little bit unique.  Less dark overall than the usual depiction; more high fantasy.

Speaking of which, I’ll be releasing the first story, “Showdown,” on the Spring Equinox!  That’s March 20 this year.  It’s in the final editing stages and I’m just waiting for the cover image.  When I have all that, you’ll be able to get it by pre-order.

There’s Space Western for The West In Space!, and there’s Cattle Punk for The West meets Steam Punk. The Weird West is for when The West meets the supernatural.

A Weird West Primer

Here’s a good article from Tor.com about the Weird West.  Except that I disagree with their opening.  The Wild West is Canadian too.  It’s unfortunate that we seem to be letting the Americans get away with claiming that myth as their own.  It is American, but everything West of Winnipeg has this as part of our past also.  The Okanagan Valley (my home) was founded first by the Okanagan First Nation of the Interior Salish, and then by missionaries, miners, and cattle ranchers, and the CP Rail (a heroic feat of Western determination if there ever was one) was part of the condition that British Columbia laid down for joining Confederation.  (Scroll down to the section in my link about the Canadian Pacific Railway; the “Last Spike” was driven a little more than an hour’s drive from where I live.)  I will write a more detailed article about the Canadian West sometime soon.
